Do senior year grades matter for UChicago admissions?
I’m a high school senior and UChicago is one of my top choices. I’ve heard different things about how much colleges look at first-semester or second-semester senior grades after someone applies.
I’m trying to understand whether strong or weak senior year grades can still affect an application decision at UChicago.

Yes, senior year grades do matter for UChicago. They usually review your transcript through junior year when you apply, but first-semester senior grades can absolutely influence the decision if they are available, especially in Regular Decision. Even after admission, UChicago expects you to maintain strong academic performance, and a significant drop can create problems.
For Early Action or Early Decision applicants, the admissions office may make a decision before first-semester grades are posted, but many high schools still send a midyear report, and UChicago can consider it if it arrives in time. For Regular Decision, midyear senior grades are much more likely to be part of the file and can help confirm an upward trend, strong course rigor, or continued excellence in demanding classes.
Weak senior grades can hurt in two ways. First, if your application is borderline, lower first-semester grades may make it harder to convince UChicago that you are ready for its academic intensity. Second, after admission, colleges like UChicago can review final transcripts, and a noticeable decline, such as multiple drops in core academic classes, could lead to questions or even a rescinded offer in more serious cases.
Strong senior grades are especially useful if your earlier record had a rough patch, if you are taking your hardest courses now, or if you want to reinforce that you can handle UChicago’s pace.
