Is UNC or Rice harder to get into?

Rice is generally harder to get into than UNC overall. Rice has a much smaller incoming class, a more national and international applicant pool, and admissions is selective at a very high level across residency categories. UNC is also very competitive, but the comparison changes depending on whether you are in-state or out-of-state.

For a Texas or North Carolina student looking at fit and odds separately, Rice tends to be the tougher admit because it evaluates an extremely compressed pool for a small private university class. It draws many applicants with near-top academics from across the country, so there is very little room for error in grades, course rigor, and overall application strength.

For a North Carolina resident, UNC can feel meaningfully more accessible than Rice because UNC is a public flagship that prioritizes serving in-state students.

For an out-of-state student, UNC can become closer to Rice in difficulty and in some cases may feel just as hard because UNC limits how much of the class can come from outside North Carolina. So if you are not a North Carolina resident, UNC is not the “easier” option people sometimes assume from the name recognition of a public university.

The clearest way to think about it is this: Rice is the more uniformly selective school overall, while UNC’s selectivity depends much more on residency. If you want a simple direct answer without qualifiers, Rice is usually considered harder to get into, but UNC out-of-state is also extremely tough.
