Is UNC Chapel Hill or Georgia Tech harder to get into for undergraduate admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UNC Chapel Hill’s selectivity changes a lot based on residency, while Georgia Tech’s selectivity is more tied to your major and academic profile, especially for engineering and computing. For North Carolina residents, UNC can be relatively more accessible than many people expect because the university prioritizes in-state enrollment. For out-of-state applicants, UNC becomes extremely difficult to crack, often feeling tougher than people assume from its public-school status.

Georgia Tech is also very selective, but in a more consistently intense way across the applicant pool, particularly for students aiming at engineering, computer science, and other high-demand STEM fields. Its applicant pool is heavily self-selected toward strong math and science students, which can make admission feel especially competitive even for applicants with excellent grades and scores. In practice, many students see Tech as harder because of that academic concentration.

So the cleanest broad answer is this: for an in-state North Carolina student, UNC Chapel Hill is often easier to get into than Georgia Tech. For an out-of-state student, UNC Chapel Hill can be just as hard as Georgia Tech, and in many cases harder.

Georgia Tech is often perceived as the tougher admit in the national conversation because of how strong and specialized its applicant pool is. But once residency enters the picture, UNC can swing from somewhat more attainable to exceptionally selective very quickly.
