Is UNC or UIUC harder to get into overall?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as I build my college list and keep seeing different opinions about which one is more selective. I know the answer can depend on the program, but I’m mostly looking for a general sense of which school is harder to get into overall.

UNC is harder to get into overall for most applicants, especially if you are applying from outside North Carolina. In plain terms, UNC is usually the tougher admit at the university-wide level.

One major reason is residency policy. UNC Chapel Hill is a public flagship that prioritizes North Carolina residents by design, so the number of seats available to nonresidents is limited. UIUC is also a public flagship, but it does not have the same kind of overall out-of-state squeeze, so its general admission pool is not usually as compressed in the same way.

Another difference is how much selectivity swings by major. At UIUC, overall admission can look more accessible than UNC, but some specific programs, especially engineering, computer science, and business-related paths, can be extremely competitive and in some cases tougher than UNC for those majors. UNC has selectivity by school too, but the university-level bar is more consistently high across the board.

Applicant behavior also matters here. UNC attracts a very large national applicant pool for a relatively limited number of spots, partly because of its strong reputation, campus experience, and value. UIUC is also very popular, but its admit landscape is more uneven by college and program, so people often hear mixed opinions because they are really comparing different majors rather than the universities overall.

So for a broad college-listing question not tied to a specific major, treat UNC as the harder overall admit. If the comparison is for something like CS or engineering, UIUC can become just as hard or harder depending on the program.
