Is UNC or UVA harder to get into?

In general, both UNC Chapel Hill and UVA are very selective, but UVA is often a bit harder to get into overall, especially for out-of-state students. UNC also has a major factor that changes the comparison: North Carolina law requires UNC to enroll a large majority of in-state students, which makes admission much tougher for applicants from outside North Carolina. So the real answer depends a lot on where you live.

For a Virginia student comparing the two, UVA can feel slightly more accessible than UNC would for an out-of-state applicant, because UVA does not have the same kind of in-state cap that sharply limits nonresidents. For a North Carolina student, UNC may be somewhat more attainable than UVA, since UNC is designed to serve in-state residents first.

For an out-of-state student with no residency advantage at either school, both belong in the highly selective category, but UNC can be especially difficult because it has fewer seats available for non-North Carolina residents. That means even very strong applicants can find UNC surprisingly tough. UVA is also hard to enter from out of state, but UNC’s enrollment rules often make the odds feel tighter.

A useful way to think about it is this: students with strong grades, rigorous coursework, and a clear academic and extracurricular profile should treat both as reaches or high targets depending on residency and overall strength. If you are in-state for one of them, that school usually becomes the more realistic option. If you are out-of-state for both, I would not assume one is meaningfully easy compared with the other, though UNC may be the trickier admit because of its limited nonresident spots.
