What are the essay requirements for applying to Queens College?

I'm planning on applying to Queens College this fall, and I'm trying to get a head start on my application materials. I've looked through the CUNY application system, but it doesn't seem super clear about what’s needed specifically for Queens College in terms of essays.

Is there a required personal statement, or do they have any special supplemental essays? Do certain majors ask for more materials? I just really don’t want to miss anything by accident, so if someone who’s already applied (or knows the process) could help clarify what I need to write, that would be amazing. Also, tips on what topics are good for QC would be appreciated!

Hoping someone out there knows this first-hand!

Great question! Queens College is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, so you'll apply through the general CUNY Application. For most first-year applicants, including those to Queens College, a personal essay is optional—it's not required. However, submitting the essay is strongly recommended, especially if you want to stand out, explain something about your background (like a dip in grades), or showcase your writing skills.

The general personal statement for CUNY asks you to tell a story that highlights something unique or important about you—why you want to attend, what you’ll contribute, or how you’ve overcome something meaningful. Usually, CUNY gives the following prompt: “Tell us something meaningful about yourself that isn't reflected elsewhere in your application.”

Most majors at Queens College don’t require additional supplemental essays. However, a few specialized or selective programs (like the Aaron Copland School of Music, the Macaulay Honors College, or the SEEK program) may have extra essay questions, auditions, or supplemental forms. If you’re interested in these, double-check their department websites because requirements can change year to year.

If you decide to write the essay, consider focusing on a unique personal story—maybe a specific challenge you faced, a community project you led, or an unusual hobby that’s shaped your outlook. For example, if you helped run your family’s food truck after school, you could write about a particular day when you solved an unexpected problem or connected with the local community in a meaningful way. Avoid generic topics like just overcoming a tough class or winning a game—one vivid, personal moment is much more compelling.

Final tip: Review the CUNY application guidelines before submitting. The essay is sent to all CUNY schools you apply to, so make it relevant and authentic, but you don’t need to tailor it for Queens specifically. And if you’re unsure, reach out directly to admissions or your intended department—they’re usually quick to help.

Good luck with your application! Starting early is always a smart move.
