Can anyone share strong examples of 'Why are you interested in this college?' essays?

I'm starting my college applications and one thing I'm most stuck on is the 'why this college?' essay prompt. I've read a lot of advice online about making it specific and not generic, but I still feel lost when I try to outline my own response.

Would anyone be willing to share some sample essays (or even just paragraphs) that worked for them or that you think stand out? I'm especially interested in how people connect their personal goals or experiences to what the college offers. If you have examples for medium-sized liberal arts colleges or UChicago, that would help a lot, but honestly any good examples are appreciated!

I really want my essay to show that I'm genuinely interested and not just repeating what's on the website, but I'm not sure how to get there.

Crafting a stand-out 'Why this college?' essay is definitely challenging, but you’re already on the right track by aiming to connect your personal interests to what the college uniquely provides. Here’s an approach and example to help you get started.

The key is to be as specific as possible—mention programs, professors, clubs, or traditions that genuinely interest you. But go beyond simply naming these things. Explain how they relate to your past experiences, future goals, or values. Admissions officers are looking for evidence that you’ve done your research and can picture yourself thriving on their campus.

For instance, let’s say you’re applying to a liberal arts college with a strong environmental studies program. Instead of writing, “I want to major in environmental studies because I care about the environment and your school is ranked highly in this field,” you could try something like:

"During my junior year, I launched a composting initiative in my town after seeing how much cafeteria waste went straight to the landfill. As the project grew, I found myself craving deeper scientific understanding to better explain our impact and advocate for policy change. That’s why I’m drawn to the Environmental Studies program at [College], particularly Dr. Smith’s work on local policy implementation. I’m excited by the possibility of researching in the College’s Eco-Lab, and I hope to join the Sustainability House, where I can share my experiences and learn from peers committed to environmental action."

For UChicago, known for its quirky intellectual community, a strong answer might weave in both the school’s unique culture and your own curiosity. Here’s a partial example:

"When I stumbled on UChicago’s 'Life of the Mind' mantra, I thought of the Sunday evenings my friend and I spent debating everything from the ethics of AI to the symbolism in Borges’ stories. At UChicago, I picture those conversations expanding in the Hallowed Halls of Harper Library, or continuing with classmates in the Scav Hunt. I love that the curriculum encourages us to ask questions—even weird ones—like those in the Uncommon Essay prompts. The prospect of joining the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl excites me because I want to sharpen my reasoning with peers who love debate as much as I do."

Notice in both examples, specific details from the school are woven in with personal stories, and there’s a clear reason why this college is the right fit. When drafting your own essay, try to focus on 2-3 specific offerings and show how they line up with your goals, interests, or personality.

If you can visit campus, even virtually, mention things you noticed—a talk you attended, a club meeting, or a conversation with a student. Small, personal details can make a big difference. Good luck—you’re well on your way to a strong essay!
