USC vs Columbia for entertainment careers: which is better for film, TV, and media networking?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between USC and Columbia, and I want to work in entertainment after college. I’m especially interested in film, TV, and media, so I care a lot about internships, alumni connections, and networking opportunities.

I know both schools are strong in different ways, but I’m trying to understand which one tends to be the better choice for breaking into entertainment careers.

USC has the clearer edge for film, TV, and media networking. Its location in Los Angeles puts you in the middle of the entertainment industry during the school year, the School of Cinematic Arts is one of the most established pipelines into film and television, and USC’s alumni network in Hollywood is unusually deep and active.

The biggest differentiator is proximity to the industry. At USC, internships, part-time production work, screenings, guest speakers, and coffee-chat networking are built around being in LA, where studios, agencies, production companies, and entertainment startups are concentrated. That makes it easier to build relationships before graduation rather than waiting for summer or after college.

The second difference is how directly the school is wired into entertainment careers. USC’s film and media programs are not just academically respected, they are professionally connected in a very practical way. Students often benefit from classmates who are already pursuing industry projects, faculty with working ties to the business, and a campus culture where film, TV, screenwriting, production, and media careers are common and visible goals.

Columbia is excellent, but its strongest media advantage is broader and more cross-industry through New York. You get access to journalism, publishing, arts, culture, streaming, advertising, and some entertainment offices, but it is not as centered on the Hollywood production ecosystem. For someone specifically aiming at film and television networking, Columbia tends to offer a wider intellectual platform, while USC offers the denser day-to-day industry pipeline.

The alumni point matters too. Columbia has powerful alumni reach overall, but USC’s entertainment alumni presence is especially concentrated in the fields you named. In entertainment, concentrated networks can matter more than prestige alone because so much of hiring happens through referrals, prior collaborations, and who already knows your work.
