USC vs. University of Washington: Which Offers Better Undergraduate Research Access?

The central tradeoff is scale versus ease of navigation: the University of Washington offers an exceptionally broad research ecosystem, while USC’s smaller private-university environment can make faculty access and individualized guidance more straightforward. At both schools, undergraduates can join faculty labs early, including in their first year, but neither guarantees a lab placement simply by enrolling. Students who begin outreach early, complete relevant coursework, and can commit consistent weekly hours tend to have the best results.

UW’s Seattle campus is embedded in a major research network, with especially deep opportunities in computing, engineering, medicine and public health, neuroscience, environmental science, and the social sciences. Its Undergraduate Research Program and Mary Gates Research Scholarship are established entry points, and the university’s connections to UW Medicine expand the range of projects. The challenge is that UW is large: popular labs may receive many inquiries, and students often need to contact multiple faculty members or begin with volunteer, course-based, or assistant roles before taking on independent work.

USC also has substantial research activity and supports undergraduate participation through its Office of Undergraduate Research, faculty labs, research courses, and funding programs such as Provost Undergraduate Research Fellowships. In practice, USC students may find it easier to develop relationships with professors through smaller classes, departmental advising, and a more compact campus community. USC is particularly well positioned for work spanning engineering, computing, health, film and media, business, and interdisciplinary areas, though the total number of labs and projects in some fields may be narrower than UW’s.
