Florida State vs University of San Diego for business: which is the better choice for undergrad business?
I'm trying to decide between Florida State and the University of San Diego for an undergraduate business degree. I want a school that will give me a strong business foundation and help with internships and job opportunities after graduation.
I know both schools are respected, but I’m not sure how they compare for business overall, especially in terms of reputation and outcomes.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and cost versus location and intimacy. Florida State offers a larger public-university business environment with a broad alumni base, more campus recruiting volume, and usually a much lower price, especially for Florida residents. The University of San Diego gives you a smaller private-school setting in Southern California, easier access to San Diego-area companies, and more personal class interaction, but often at a much higher cost.
For business strength at the undergraduate level, Florida State has the edge for overall value and breadth. Its College of Business is well established, offers multiple majors and student organizations, and benefits from the resources of a major state flagship. A large student body can mean more competition for some opportunities, but it also usually means more employers, bigger alumni networks, and more structured pipelines into accounting, finance, consulting, and corporate roles.
USD is appealing if you know you want to build your network in Southern California and you prefer a smaller campus culture. The Knauss School of Business has a solid reputation, and being in San Diego is a real advantage for internships during the school year. The smaller environment can make it easier to build relationships with professors and advisors, which matters if you learn best with more direct support.
For internships and first jobs, geography matters a lot here. FSU is stronger in overall scale and reach, especially across Florida and the Southeast, while USD is more tied to the San Diego and broader California market. If your goal is to work in California after graduation, USD becomes more compelling than it might look on paper alone.
Florida State is the better undergraduate business choice for most students because it combines a strong business foundation, wider name recognition as a major public university, and better return on investment. USD is the smarter pick only when its smaller setting and California location are worth the extra cost and match where you want to build your career from the start.
