Is Florida State University or UMass Amherst better for science majors?

UMass Amherst has the edge overall for science majors, especially if you care about breadth of research, stronger visibility in the sciences, and preparation for grad school. Florida State is still a solid option, but UMass is usually the more compelling pick for a student choosing on overall science reputation.

One major differentiator is research scale and infrastructure. UMass Amherst is an R1 research university, and its science students benefit from connections across large research centers and core facilities. For an undergraduate who may want lab experience early, that kind of environment often translates into more varied projects, more faculty groups to approach, and stronger momentum toward graduate-level work.

Another difference is how broadly the science strength carries across departments. UMass tends to be better known nationally for STEM. Florida State has real strengths too, but its overall science reputation is a bit less consistently prominent across the full range of majors.
