Florida State University vs University of Washington for computer science: which is the better choice?

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus ecosystem: Florida State can be the easier place to get support and stand out, while the University of Washington offers a much stronger computer science environment and far deeper recruiting connections, especially for software internships. For CS specifically, UW has one of the most established programs in the country, is located in Seattle near major tech employers, and benefits from dense employer recruiting and research activity. FSU can still lead to solid outcomes, but it does not offer the same concentration of CS prestige, local industry access, or breadth of advanced opportunities.

On program strength alone, Washington is the clear winner for computer science. Its Allen School has a stronger academic reputation, more specialized coursework, more visible research, and a larger network in the tech industry. That matters not just for classes, but for peer community, student projects, recruiting pipelines, and the range of faculty-led work available.

For internships and jobs, UW has a real location advantage. Being in Seattle means students are much closer to major tech companies, startups, and part-time or school-year opportunities, and recruiters are very used to hiring UW CS students. At FSU, students can absolutely get internships, but the path is usually more self-driven and less plugged into a major tech hub.

Student support is the one area where the comparison can get more nuanced. UW CS is excellent, but it can also feel intense and competitive, and large, high-demand programs sometimes require more independence. FSU may feel more accessible on a day-to-day level for some students, especially if you value a less pressurized environment and want more room to build leadership or campus involvement outside the major.

If cost is anywhere close, University of Washington is the better choice for computer science. I would only put Florida State ahead if it is substantially cheaper or if you know you would thrive much better in its campus environment and support structure.
