What should I write about for the Hutton Honors College essay at Indiana University?

I'm trying to plan out my application to Indiana University and I'm really interested in the Hutton Honors College. I've looked at the essay prompts from previous years, but I'm not totally sure what they're hoping to see. Is it better to write something super academic and focused on my intellectual interests, or do they want something more personal?

I want to write an essay that helps me stand out, but I'm not sure what kind of topics work best. If anyone who has been accepted or who is also applying could share some advice or examples of what worked for them (not the full essay—just general ideas), that would be amazing. Also, do you know if the prompts change every year or stay the same?

My main extracurricular is Science Olympiad, but I also love reading fiction and volunteering at my local food bank. Should I try to tie these together, or is it better to keep the essay focused? I’d really appreciate any guidance or opinions about what makes a successful Hutton essay.

The Hutton Honors College at Indiana University typically looks for essays that balance both your intellectual interests and the unique aspects of your personality. While the prompts do change a bit from year to year, they usually ask about your motivations, your curiosity, or what you hope to contribute to an honors environment. You can usually find the current prompt on the IU website once the application cycle opens, but past versions have included questions like describing a time you pursued something beyond what was expected or reflecting on a favorite book or experience that shaped your worldview.

Successful essays often combine a focused narrative with a sense of who you are as a person. Rather than writing a generic essay about excelling academically, try to bring out your unique perspective. It's fine if your topic is somewhat academic, but you should always ground it in your own story or a specific moment. For example, instead of writing generally about Science Olympiad, you might highlight one memorable experience, like the time you failed spectacularly at an event and found yourself helping a younger teammate afterward, which revealed something unexpected about teamwork or mentorship.

It’s effective to weave together your interests if you can do it naturally. For instance, if you connect your love of science with the empathy you’ve gained from volunteering, you could discuss how curiosity drives both your analytical and your humanitarian sides. One possible angle: 'My passion for Science Olympiad stoked my curiosity, but my food bank work taught me about the realities science can help address.' From there, you can thread together a story that isn’t just a list, but reveals growth or insight.

The best Hutton essays are usually focused on a single, compelling topic and include reflection. Admission officers appreciate essays that reveal authentic curiosity, show you think deeply, and demonstrate you’re ready to contribute thoughtfully in an honors environment. Sharing how a book changed your approach to Science Olympiad, or how helping at the food bank challenged an assumption or inspired a research question, can be a powerful way to stand out.

In summary: Pick a moment or idea meaningful to you, reflect on how it’s shaped you, and show how that experience will make you a valuable part of the Hutton community. If you can tie your interests together cohesively, that can make your application even stronger, but don’t force connections if they aren’t natural for you.

If you're unsure about whether the prompt has changed, it’s a good idea to check IU's admissions page each fall. Good luck planning your essay—your experiences sound like they have a lot of great potential!
