Cornell vs Northwestern for internships: which school has better internship opportunities overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting style: Northwestern gives you easier in-semester access to internships because it sits next to Chicago, while Cornell often offers a broader spread of recruiting pipelines across industries but relies more on summer internships and structured on-campus recruiting. For day-to-day internship access, Northwestern has a real advantage because students can commute into Chicago during the academic year. Cornell, though, has a very large alumni network and strong employer recognition that can open doors nationally, especially through formal recruiting cycles.

Northwestern tends to feel more convenient for internships simply because Chicago is such a major hub for consulting, finance, media, healthcare, nonprofits, and tech offices. Students can network, attend employer events, and sometimes work part-time during the school year without the same travel barriers Ithaca creates. That proximity matters if you want repeated face time with employers or internships before summer.

Cornell’s internship ecosystem is still excellent, just different in how it works. Because Ithaca is more isolated, Cornell students often depend more heavily on Handshake postings, alumni outreach, career fairs, and summer recruiting rather than local semester-time internships. The upside is that Cornell has strong national pull and very established pipelines with major employers, so students are not limited to one city’s market.

Northwestern’s alumni network is also very loyal and especially useful in Chicago and certain professional fields.

For internship opportunities in the most practical sense, Northwestern has the better setup because Chicago makes access easier and more immediate during the school year.
