Is Cornell or Carnegie Mellon better for getting internships?

The main tradeoff is that Carnegie Mellon offers a more concentrated, tech-centered recruiting environment, while Cornell gives you similarly strong access to major employers plus a broader university network and more paths across industries. For computer science, both schools are well known to recruiters and routinely attract large technology, finance, consulting, and research employers. Neither choice would limit a motivated student’s ability to land strong internships; your coursework, projects, interview preparation, and early applications will matter more than a small difference in institutional access.

Carnegie Mellon can feel especially efficient for students focused on software engineering, AI, robotics, cybersecurity, or quantitative technical roles. Its School of Computer Science has an unusually dense ecosystem of technical peers, faculty connections, employer events, and alumni in those fields.

Cornell has excellent CS recruiting as well, with strong employer interest from large tech companies, startups, quantitative finance firms, and engineering organizations. Its larger scale means more academic options, alumni connections, and adjacent opportunities in areas such as business, design, operations research, and applied science. Cornell’s Ithaca location is less urban than Pittsburgh, but students commonly secure summer roles in New York City, the Bay Area, Seattle, Boston, and other major hubs; Cornell Tech in New York City can also be relevant later, particularly for graduate study or entrepreneurial interests.

For a student whose priority is the most immersive, narrowly tech-focused pipeline, Carnegie Mellon has a modest edge. Cornell is the stronger pick when you want top-tier CS recruiting while retaining more flexibility to combine computing with other fields and access a broader university environment.
