Which offers better access to Boston internships: Cornell or Tufts?

The biggest practical difference is that Tufts students can pursue Boston internships during the academic year, while Cornell students would ordinarily need to target Boston roles for summers, winter break, or a leave/semester away. Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus is connected to the MBTA through the Green Line, making commutes to many Boston and Cambridge employers realistic. Cornell’s main campus is in Ithaca, so a recurring in-person Boston internship is not practical alongside a normal course schedule.

At Tufts, proximity broadens the kinds of opportunities you can consider: part-time roles during the semester, research positions at Boston-area hospitals or labs, nonprofit and policy work, and internships that begin with a few hours per week and grow over time. It also makes networking events, informational interviews, and interviews easier to attend on short notice. Cambridge’s technology, biotech, and startup ecosystem is especially accessible from Tufts, in addition to downtown Boston organizations.

Cornell students can still obtain Boston internships, particularly for the summer. Cornell has a large alumni network and strong recruiting resources, and many employers hire nationally rather than only from nearby campuses. But you would need to arrange summer housing in Boston or focus on remote work; Ithaca’s distance makes it much harder to build an ongoing local presence during the year.

For the specific goal of regular Boston-area internships while enrolled, Tufts offers meaningfully better access. Cornell can be the right choice for other academic or campus reasons, but its location places a real constraint on semester-time Boston opportunities.
