USC or NYU for marketing careers: which is better for getting into marketing after college?

I’m trying to decide between USC and NYU and I’m interested in marketing as a career. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure which one would give me better opportunities for internships, networking, and getting a first job after graduation.

I want to choose the school that has the stronger path into marketing, especially for someone who is not 100% sure which area of marketing they want to go into yet.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Los Angeles plus USC’s tight alumni network versus New York City plus NYU’s constant access to employers. For marketing, both can work very well, but they create different pipelines: USC tends to be especially strong for entertainment, brand partnerships, and West Coast agency or media roles, while NYU gives you unusually direct exposure to advertising, fashion, luxury, publishing, tech, and major brand headquarters in New York. If you are still unsure which branch of marketing you want, NYU often gives broader day-to-day proximity to more industries at once.

USC’s advantage is the Trojan network and the way business, communication, and media industries intersect there. If you are interested in marketing tied to film, music, sports, influencer culture, or entertainment strategy, USC has a real edge because those sectors are deeply embedded in Los Angeles and the alumni base is famously active. The campus experience is also more traditional, which can make it easier for some students to build community and get involved in clubs, case competitions, and student-run marketing work.

NYU’s advantage is volume and variety of access. Being in New York means internships during the semester are often more feasible, and that matters in marketing because early hands-on experience can shape your path fast. If you might want to test consumer insights, media planning, digital strategy, PR-adjacent work, fashion marketing, or brand management, NYU gives you a very wide field without needing to lock into one niche too early.

For first-job outcomes, neither school is likely to block you. Employers know both, and marketing hiring often depends heavily on internships, portfolio-style experience, and networking more than the school name alone. The difference is where and how you want to build that experience: USC can be especially powerful if you want a warmer alumni-driven path, while NYU can be stronger if you want frequent in-semester exposure to companies across multiple marketing sectors.

If the goal is the strongest overall launch into marketing while you are still exploring, I would lean NYU. If you already feel pulled toward entertainment, media, sports, or creator-focused brand work, USC becomes very compelling and could easily be the smarter choice.
