Is RPI or Cornell more fun for undergrads?

For most undergrads, Cornell will feel more fun day to day. It has a much larger student body, a more active residential and club scene, Big Red athletics, Greek life, and a college-town environment in Ithaca that creates a lot of social options on and off campus. RPI can absolutely be enjoyable, but the vibe is usually more niche, more academically intense in a narrower way, and less socially broad.

Cornell tends to fit students who want a campus that feels busy and alive almost all the time. There are more types of people, more events, more traditions, and more ways to find your crowd, whether that is through project teams, performing arts, outdoorsy groups, dining halls, house parties, or just the energy of a campus where a huge portion of the city revolves around students. Even students who are very serious academically often still talk about Cornell as having a strong sense of school spirit and a real weekend culture.

RPI fits a student who is happiest in a smaller, more tech-centered environment where fun may come more from friend groups, gaming, maker culture, engineering clubs, and campus traditions than from a big all-campus social buzz. The social scene is there, but it is usually less expansive and less varied than Cornell’s. Troy has some things to do, but it does not shape undergraduate life in the same way Ithaca does for Cornell.

One practical way to think about it is this: at Cornell, fun is easier to stumble into because there is so much happening around you. At RPI, fun often depends more on intentionally building your circle and plugging into specific communities. For a student who wants higher day-to-day energy and more visible social life, Cornell usually comes out ahead.
