The biggest practical difference is that Boston University is woven directly into a major city, while RPI sits on a hill above a smaller city that students can access but do not experience as seamlessly every day. BU’s campus runs along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, with shops, restaurants, transit stops, and city neighborhoods immediately around you. RPI is in Troy, which has a real downtown and some local energy, but the campus itself feels more separate and more traditionally self-contained.

For day-to-day walkability, BU is much more urban. Students regularly walk to coffee shops, late-night food, grocery stores, the T, the Charles River, and nearby neighborhoods without feeling like they are leaving campus for a special trip. The campus is linear and busy, so your normal routine already happens in the middle of city life.
