Is RPI or Cornell more prestigious for engineering and STEM?

Cornell is more widely viewed as the more prestigious name for engineering and STEM. It has broader national and international recognition, an Ivy League association that carries weight beyond engineering, and a very strong reputation across multiple STEM fields, including engineering, computer science, physics, and applied sciences.

One major difference is name recognition outside specialized technical circles. RPI is well respected, especially among people who know engineering schools, but Cornell’s brand is much more universally recognized by employers, graduate programs, and the general public. That broader visibility tends to translate into a stronger prestige perception even when both schools are respected academically.

Another differentiator is the scale and reach of Cornell’s research ecosystem. Cornell has extensive research activity, major graduate and doctoral programs, and a large presence in both traditional engineering and adjacent STEM areas. In academia, that usually matters because people often associate prestige with research output, faculty visibility, and institutional influence across fields.

RPI still has real credibility in engineering, and in some industry circles it has a reputation for producing technically strong graduates with a focused STEM identity. But its prestige is more niche: people who know engineering may think highly of it, while Cornell tends to carry more immediate weight across students, employers, faculty, and nontechnical audiences as well.

So in everyday perception, Cornell has the stronger prestige advantage, while RPI is better described as a respected specialized tech school rather than a peer in overall brand power.
