Is RPI or Case Western more prestigious?
I’m trying to compare these two schools as I narrow down my college list, and I keep seeing both mentioned as strong STEM options. I know prestige can be subjective, but I want to understand how people generally view RPI versus Case Western in terms of reputation and recognition.

Case Western is usually seen as having broader national name recognition right now, while RPI has a very strong reputation in engineering and technical circles. In other words, Case Western often carries a slightly wider all-around academic reputation, especially because of its medical and research presence, while RPI is especially respected for engineering, computing, and applied science. Neither school has a prestige gap so large that it should drive your whole college decision by itself.
Case Western tends to appeal more to students who want a university that feels research-heavy across multiple disciplines, not just STEM. Its connection to major hospitals and health-related research gives it visibility beyond engineering, so people in medicine, biotech, and academic research are often very familiar with it. If you care about broad recognition from people outside technical fields, Case Western often has the edge.
RPI fits students who care most about being in a deeply technical environment with a long-standing engineering identity. It has a historic reputation in engineering and is well known among employers and academics who specifically value rigorous quantitative training. In some engineering-focused settings, especially among people who know STEM education well, RPI can be viewed every bit as seriously as Case Western and sometimes even more distinctly.
So the real difference is less about one being clearly more prestigious and more about where that reputation lands. Case Western is often perceived as the more broadly visible institution, while RPI has a sharper, more specialized brand. For internships, grad school, and jobs in engineering, both are respected enough that your performance, projects, research, and experience will matter much more than the small difference in overall public perception.
