Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or the University of Michigan better for electrical engineering?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Michigan for electrical engineering, and both seem really strong. I care most about which school would give me the better overall engineering experience, including academics, opportunities, and how the program is viewed.

I’m not sure how to compare them, so I’m looking for a clear way to think about which one is the better choice for EE.

For electrical engineering, UIUC has the edge. Its ECE department is one of the defining strengths of the university, the program is exceptionally deep in core EE areas like circuits, communications, semiconductors, signal processing, and computer engineering, and employers and graduate programs know UIUC ECE as a major pipeline for technical talent.

One big differentiator is departmental scale and specialization. UIUC’s electrical and computer engineering unit is unusually large and broad, which means more upper-level technical electives, more faculty working in specialized subfields, and a stronger chance of finding research or coursework closely matched to a specific EE interest. If you already suspect you may want to go deep in areas like embedded systems, microelectronics, power, photonics, or DSP, UIUC tends to offer slightly more density there.

Another difference is how central engineering feels to campus identity. Michigan has outstanding engineering, but it is also a more broadly famous all-around university. At UIUC, engineering, and especially ECE, sits even more at the center of the school’s academic reputation and recruiting ecosystem. That often translates into a very concentrated technical culture, with heavy employer attention in computing, hardware, defense, chips, and related engineering sectors.

The last useful distinction is overall experience versus pure EE strength. Michigan may feel stronger if you care a lot about cross-campus prestige, school spirit, alumni reach across many industries, and a slightly more balanced college experience beyond engineering. But if the question is specifically which place is better for electrical engineering itself, UIUC is the one I’d pick because the department’s depth, specialization, and reputation in EE are a little harder to beat.
