University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs Dartmouth for engineering: which is the better choice?

The biggest tradeoff is depth and scale versus intimacy and flexibility. UIUC offers a much larger, more specialized engineering ecosystem, with broader course options, more labs, more student project teams, and stronger visibility with engineering employers. Dartmouth gives you a smaller undergraduate environment, closer access to professors, and an engineering experience that is more integrated with the liberal arts.

For engineering specifically, UIUC has the clearer edge in academic depth. Its College of Engineering is one of the most established in the country, and that matters in practical ways: more subfields, more advanced electives, larger research infrastructure, and a bigger alumni network in engineering-heavy industries. If you already think you may want a traditional engineering path like mechanical, electrical, civil, aerospace, or computer engineering, UIUC usually provides more built-out options.

Dartmouth’s Thayer School is respected, but it feels different from a large public engineering powerhouse. The program is intentionally undergraduate-focused and collaborative, and students often talk about how easy it is to know faculty well and combine engineering with economics, policy, design, or the humanities. That can be a real advantage if you want a broad education and close mentorship, but it is not the same kind of large-scale engineering environment UIUC offers.

In terms of opportunities, both can be excellent, but they show up differently. UIUC tends to have more sheer volume: more recruiting, more technical student organizations, more peers deeply centered on engineering, and more specialized facilities. Dartmouth can offer easier access to professors and undergraduate research, but the menu is smaller.

If the question is which school is stronger for engineering itself, UIUC is the better choice. Dartmouth becomes more compelling when you want engineering in a distinctly smaller, more personal, and more interdisciplinary college setting rather than the deepest possible engineering bench.
