For management consulting recruiting, is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Tulane a better choice?

I’m a high school senior trying to choose between University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Tulane. I’m interested in management consulting and want to go to the school that gives me the better shot at recruiting, internships, and networking in that field.

I know both schools have different strengths, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is viewed more favorably for consulting opportunities and on-campus recruiting.

For management consulting recruiting, UIUC is usually the safer bet if your priority is scale, employer access, and a larger alumni base in business-related fields. Gies College of Business has a strong national reputation, the campus draws many major employers, and the sheer size of Illinois means more student organizations, more alumni contacts, and more structured recruiting pathways. If you want the campus where consulting recruiting is likely to feel more built-out and less niche, Illinois has the edge.

UIUC tends to suit the student who wants a big, highly resourced public university where career preparation can be very proactive and systematized. There are more chances to plug into business fraternities, consulting clubs, case prep communities, and large career fairs. For consulting specifically, that matters because recruiting often rewards repetition, peer preparation, and access to older students who have already interned at target firms.

Tulane makes more sense for the student who wants a smaller, more personalized environment and is comfortable doing more of the networking legwork independently. Tulane has strong outcomes in business and a loyal alumni network, especially in certain cities, but it is not typically thought of as having the same breadth of on-campus recruiting for consulting as UIUC. The New Orleans location can be appealing, and some students do very well through relationship-driven networking, but the pipeline is likely to be narrower.

Another factor is how certain you are about studying business. At UIUC, being in or aiming for Gies is especially relevant, since that brand will matter more than simply being at the university overall. At Tulane, the smaller scale can help you stand out more easily, but for consulting, brand plus recruiting volume often matters.

So if your question is strictly about maximizing odds for consulting internships, OCR access, and alumni reach, I would lean UIUC, especially through Gies. Tulane is still a credible option, but it fits better for someone who values the smaller-school experience enough to accept a somewhat less direct consulting pipeline.
