University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Cornell for engineering: which is better overall?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and these two schools keep coming up for engineering. I know both have strong programs, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered better overall for engineering and why.

I’m mainly looking at the school’s reputation, academic strength, and how well the engineering program is regarded.

Cornell has the stronger overall national reputation for engineering, while UIUC is absolutely in the same top-tier conversation and is especially respected in several engineering fields. UIUC is one of the most respected public engineering schools in the country and is often viewed as peer-level or even stronger in certain technical areas, especially in fields tied to computing and large-scale research.

Cornell stands out most on overall brand and cross-disciplinary reputation. Its engineering school benefits from the broader Cornell name, which can matter for employers outside of engineering, for certain finance or consulting paths, and for international recognition. The academic environment is also known for being rigorous and theory-heavy, with strong connections across engineering, applied science, business, and research.

UIUC’s biggest differentiator is the sheer depth and scale of its engineering ecosystem. Grainger Engineering is enormous, highly specialized, and deeply embedded in technical recruiting, especially for computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and related areas. In some engineering circles, UIUC is not seen as a step below Cornell at all. It is seen as a powerhouse in its own right, with major research output, strong faculty, and a very broad set of advanced lab and course options.

For reputation specifically within engineering, the gap is smaller than the overall university names might suggest. Among engineers and technical employers, UIUC has outstanding credibility, and in some subfields it may even have the edge. Among the general public and in nontechnical settings, Cornell’s name tends to travel further. So if the question is which is better overall by broad reputation, Cornell gets the nod. If the question is which is better regarded strictly inside engineering, especially in hands-on technical depth and certain specialties, UIUC is very hard to beat.
