How do University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Carnegie Mellon compare for software engineering?

I'm trying to decide between these two schools and want to understand which one is generally considered better for software engineering.

I know both have strong CS reputations, but I'm mostly looking at the strength of the software engineering focus and the overall undergrad experience for someone interested in that field.

Carnegie Mellon has the stronger overall reputation specifically for software engineering. Its School of Computer Science is one of the most established in the country, and CMU is unusually strong in areas that feed directly into software engineering such as systems, programming languages, AI, human-computer interaction, and large-scale project work. For an undergraduate who wants to be surrounded by a very concentrated CS culture, CMU usually carries more weight.

One big differentiator is depth and specialization. Carnegie Mellon offers a more intense computer science environment with a denser cluster of faculty, research labs, and peers focused on computing. That often translates into earlier exposure to advanced coursework, strong recruiting from top software companies, and a campus culture where building software is central to student life rather than just one strong area among many.

UIUC stands out more for scale and value. Its CS program is also elite, and software-related opportunities are extensive, with a huge engineering ecosystem, major recruiting presence, and a large alumni network in tech. For undergraduates, that can mean more flexibility, more student organizations, and excellent access to internships, but also a larger and sometimes less personalized experience than CMU.

The undergraduate experience feels different too. CMU is known for being academically intense and very project-heavy, which can be excellent preparation for serious software engineering work but also more demanding day to day. UIUC still offers rigorous CS training, yet the broader Big Ten campus environment tends to feel more expansive socially and academically, which some students prefer if they want a strong software path without such a singularly concentrated tech atmosphere.

In terms of pure software engineering prestige and focus, CMU has the edge. In terms of getting an outstanding software engineering education with more scale, school spirit, and often better in-state affordability, UIUC remains one of the very best alternatives.
