University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Carnegie Mellon for cybersecurity: which is better overall?

You can find security-focused coursework, labs, faculty, and interdisciplinary work that connects computer science, engineering, public policy, and human factors. That matters because modern cybersecurity is not just about technical defense.

Career preparation is another place CMU stands out. Employers in security know the school well. The connections to government, major tech companies, and security-focused organizations are especially strong, which can translate into internships, research roles, and recruiting pipelines that are unusually relevant to this field.

UIUC is still an excellent option, especially if you want a larger public university environment with very strong computer science and engineering overall. You would absolutely be able to build a path into cybersecurity there through CS, ECE, research groups, clubs, and technical recruiting. But compared with CMU, cybersecurity at UIUC tends to feel more like a strong pathway within a broad top-tier tech university, while at CMU it feels more like a flagship area with exceptional depth and national prominence.
