How do I decide between UC Davis and Cal Poly Pomona for college?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my options, and I keep going back and forth between UC Davis and Cal Poly Pomona. Both seem like good fits in different ways, but I’m having a hard time telling which one would be the better overall choice for me.

I’m mainly trying to figure out how to compare two schools like this in a practical way.

UC Davis is the stronger overall pick for most students because it offers a broader academic environment, more research access, and a more traditional residential college experience. It has the depth of a large UC campus, with extensive majors across sciences, engineering, social sciences, agriculture, and the humanities. Cal Poly Pomona is appealing for its practical, hands-on approach, but Davis usually gives you more flexibility if your interests change.

One big differentiator is academic range and mobility. At UC Davis, it is easier to find strong options across very different fields, plus more opportunities to combine interests through minors, electives, labs, and campus institutes. If you are not completely locked into one career path, that breadth matters.

Another is campus life. UC Davis functions much more like a classic college town university, where the school shapes the local environment and student life is deeply centered around campus. Cal Poly Pomona is more commuter-friendly and more integrated into the larger Southern California region, which can be a plus for some students but often creates a less immersive day-to-day college feel.

The third practical difference is career preparation style. Cal Poly Pomona stands out for applied learning and strong ties to industries in Southern California, especially in fields where hands-on training matters. UC Davis still places students well, but it often leans more toward a mix of research, internships, graduate study pathways, and broader academic exploration.

The easiest way to compare them is to rank four things for yourself: total cost, your intended major, whether you want a residential or more commuter-style experience, and how certain you are about your academic direction. If the prices are close and you want the fullest campus experience with wider academic options, UC Davis usually comes out ahead. If Cal Poly Pomona is significantly cheaper and you want a more applied, career-focused education near the LA area, that can absolutely outweigh the brand difference.
