Is UC Davis or Cal Poly better for hands-on learning?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Cal Poly is built more intentionally around learning by doing from the start, while UC Davis offers plenty of hands-on opportunities but often through a larger research-university structure that can feel more indirect early on. Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” approach is not just a slogan; it shows up in labs, project-based courses, design work, shops, and applied class formats across many majors. UC Davis absolutely has strong experiential learning too, especially through research, labs, fieldwork, internships, and agriculture-related programs, but the experience can depend more on your department and how actively you seek it out.

For an applied classroom experience, Cal Poly usually has the clearer edge. Students there often get more direct contact with equipment, prototypes, team projects, and industry-style assignments as part of regular coursework, especially in engineering, architecture, agriculture, and other technical fields. Its undergraduate focus also means practical work is often centered on undergrads rather than filtered through a graduate-heavy environment.

UC Davis stands out more if your idea of hands-on learning includes research, large-scale university resources, and flexibility across disciplines. In areas like biological sciences, environmental science, animal science, agriculture, and health-related pathways, Davis can offer excellent real-world work through labs, field stations, clinics, farms, and faculty-led projects. But in some majors, the first-year experience may feel more lecture-heavy before the applied pieces ramp up.

If hands-on learning is your top priority in the day-to-day classroom experience, Cal Poly is usually the better answer. UC Davis can absolutely deliver practical experience, and in some fields it may offer broader research depth, but Cal Poly is more consistently designed around applied learning as the default undergraduate experience.
