UC Davis vs Rice for computer science: which is the better choice for a CS major?

I’m trying to decide between UC Davis and Rice for computer science. I know both are strong schools, but I’m having a hard time comparing them for a CS major specifically.

I want to understand which one is generally the better fit for someone focused on computer science, especially in terms of academics and overall opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and environment: UC Davis gives you a large public-university CS experience with broad course offerings and a big recruiting ecosystem, while Rice gives you a smaller, more personal department with easier faculty access and a tighter campus community. For computer science specifically, Rice tends to offer more individual attention and a lower student-to-faculty feel, while UC Davis benefits from being part of the UC system and from its proximity to California tech networks. Your day-to-day experience as a CS student would likely feel very different at the two schools even if both can lead to strong outcomes.

Academically, Rice has an edge if you value smaller classes, closer advising, and a campus culture where undergraduates often have direct access to professors and research. Its residential college system also makes the social side unusually cohesive for a research university, which matters more than people expect in a demanding major like CS. UC Davis is strong too, but the public-school scale can mean more competition for certain classes, less personalized advising, and a more self-directed experience.

On opportunities, UC Davis has real advantages in California location and the size of its alumni and employer network. Being in the UC ecosystem can help with internships, and California remains a very practical place to study CS because so many companies recruit there. Rice, though, punches above its size, and Houston offers access to tech, engineering, startups, and interdisciplinary work, especially if you like combining CS with fields like data science, bio, business, or engineering.

If cost is close, I would lean Rice for CS because the undergraduate experience is usually more supportive and more personalized without giving up strong academics or career outcomes. I would lean UC Davis instead only if the California location, in-state affordability, or the larger public-school environment is a major plus for you.
