How do student clubs work at Tsinghua University?

I’m looking into Tsinghua University and trying to understand what student life is like there. The clubs and extracurriculars seem like a big part of campus culture, but I can’t tell how they are organized or how active they usually are.

I’m mainly trying to understand how student clubs work in general so I can get a better sense of what joining them might be like.

Student clubs at Tsinghua are a major part of campus life, and they are generally well organized, active, and easy to join once you arrive. Most clubs are student-run but operate under university oversight, usually through the Student Association or Youth League-related structures, and Tsinghua has a very large number of registered organizations covering arts, sports, technology, public service, media, debate, and academic interests. In practice, joining often happens during the start-of-term recruitment period, when clubs set up booths, hold intro events, and invite new members to sign up.

The basic structure is similar to many universities: a club has student leaders, regular members, scheduled activities, and some approval or reporting requirements through the university. At Tsinghua, larger or more established clubs may have clearer internal roles, such as event planning, publicity, finance, and training. Some groups are very casual and social, while others, especially performance groups, competition teams, or volunteer organizations, can be more selective and time-intensive.

Activity level varies a lot by club. Popular clubs may hold weekly meetings, workshops, rehearsals, or practices, while smaller groups might meet around specific events or projects. Tsinghua is known for a busy and high-achieving student culture, so many students do participate in extracurriculars, but they often balance them carefully with academics.

There are also university-wide festivals, performances, sports events, and volunteer initiatives that give clubs a visible role on campus. If you joined, the experience would likely depend on whether you choose a broad-interest social club, a skill-based group, or a more competitive team.
