What internship opportunities are available for Tsinghua University students?

I’m a high school student looking into Tsinghua University and trying to understand what kinds of internships students there can usually access.

I’ve heard the school has strong industry connections, but I’m not sure whether that mainly applies to research roles, company internships, or both.

Tsinghua students usually have access to both company internships and research positions, and that is one of the university’s biggest strengths. Students commonly intern at large firms in Beijing and other major cities, and many also work in university labs, research institutes, or startup environments tied to Tsinghua’s ecosystem.

On the company side, internships are often strongest for students in computer science, engineering, business, economics, and related fields. Tsinghua’s location in Beijing helps a lot because students can reach internships with major tech companies, state-owned enterprises, financial institutions, and policy organizations during the academic year, not just in the summer. The university also has strong alumni networks, which can make recruiting pipelines more established than at many other schools.

On the research side, undergraduates can often join faculty labs or research groups, especially in STEM fields. That can mean work in AI, engineering, materials science, environmental science, public policy, or biomedical areas, depending on the department. For students considering graduate school, this kind of research experience can be just as important as a traditional corporate internship.

There are also opportunities connected to entrepreneurship. Tsinghua has a well-known innovation and startup culture, so some students intern with early-stage companies, incubators, or projects linked to university-affiliated science parks and innovation platforms.

In practical terms, the mix of opportunities depends a lot on your major, Chinese language ability, and career goals. A student in computer science might choose between a lab, a major tech internship, or a startup, while a student in public policy might look more toward think tanks, government-linked organizations, or research centers.
