How important are extracurricular activities for Tsinghua University admissions?
I’m a high school junior trying to understand what Tsinghua University looks for beyond grades and test scores. I know the school is very competitive, so I’m trying to figure out how much extracurricular activities matter in the admissions process.
I’m mostly active in a few school clubs and some volunteer work, and I want to know whether that kind of involvement is actually important for applying there.

Extracurricular activities do matter for Tsinghua University, but they are usually secondary to academics, exam performance, and the specific admissions track you apply through. Activities become more important when they show unusual achievement, leadership, research potential, or a clear fit with your intended field.
If you are applying through an international undergraduate route, Tsinghua often reviews the whole application more broadly, so extracurriculars can help distinguish you from other strong students. In that context, school clubs and volunteer work are useful if they are consistent, meaningful, and connected to your interests rather than just a long list of memberships. A few sustained activities with real responsibility usually help more than many shallow ones.
What matters most is the quality of involvement. For example, leading a science club project, organizing a tutoring initiative, winning a subject competition, doing research, or building something independently tends to carry more weight than simply attending meetings. Tsinghua especially values evidence of intellectual ability, initiative, and contribution, so activities that demonstrate those traits are the strongest.
Your current profile can absolutely be relevant if your club work and volunteering show commitment and impact. If your volunteer work includes planning events, mentoring younger students, or solving a concrete problem, that is more persuasive than just reporting hours. The same goes for clubs: leadership, projects, competitions, and measurable results make the activity more meaningful in an admissions file.
