What extracurricular activities help strengthen a UC Merced application?

I’m a junior trying to plan my activities list and I’m looking at UC Merced as one of my college options. I know colleges care more about depth than just joining a bunch of clubs, but I’m not sure what kinds of extracurriculars tend to stand out for this school.

I want to focus my time on activities that would make my application stronger without just doing things for the sake of filling space.

For UC Merced, the strongest extracurriculars are the ones that show sustained commitment, leadership, initiative, and connection to your academic interests or community. UC Merced reviews applicants holistically through the UC system’s application, and activities matter most when they demonstrate impact over time rather than a long list of casual memberships.

Good examples include research programs, science fairs, coding projects, robotics, environmental clubs, health-related volunteering, tutoring, student government, cultural organizations, part-time work, and family responsibilities. UC campuses also value service and context, so helping support your household, caring for siblings, or holding a job can strengthen your application just as much as a traditional club if you explain the responsibility and time commitment clearly. Starting something can help too, but only if it solves a real need, such as organizing a local tutoring group or leading a recycling effort at school.

What tends to stand out most is depth. Staying with one or two activities for several years, taking on a real role, and being able to show results is usually better than joining six unrelated clubs senior year. For example, leading a community garden project, conducting water-quality research, or building an app for a local problem is more compelling than simply listing membership in multiple organizations.

On the UC application, how you describe the activity matters a lot. Focus on what you actually did, how often you did it, any leadership or initiative you showed, and the outcome.
