What is the best strategy for accepting a UC Merced waitlist spot?

I got waitlisted at UC Merced and I’m trying to figure out what I should do next. I know I need to decide whether to accept the waitlist spot, but I’m not sure what makes the most sense if it’s one of my backup options.

I’m mainly trying to understand the general strategy for handling a UC waitlist without hurting my chances elsewhere.

The best strategy is to accept the UC Merced waitlist only if you would genuinely consider attending if admitted. Accepting a waitlist spot does not hurt your chances at other schools, and for UC campuses you should still commit to another college by that school’s enrollment deadline while you wait. UC Merced’s waitlist process is optional, and if they offer you admission later, you can then decide whether to switch.

For UC Merced specifically, the most important move is simply following the instructions in your portal by the deadline. Do not assume that being waitlisted means you should send lots of extra material. If UC Merced allows updates or asks for additional information, provide concise, meaningful updates such as stronger senior-year grades, a new award, or a major leadership role. If they do not ask for more, respect that process.

If Merced is truly just a backup you would not choose over your current options, decline the waitlist and move on. If you would attend Merced over at least one of your current admits, accept the spot and treat it as a parallel option, not your main plan.
