How can I stand out in my UC Merced application?

I’m a high school junior putting together my college list, and UC Merced is one of the schools I’m considering. I know it’s important to show more than just grades, but I’m not sure what really makes an application stand out there.

I’m mainly trying to understand what kinds of experiences, activities, or personal qualities would strengthen a UC Merced application.

To stand out for UC Merced, focus on showing clear academic preparation, sustained involvement outside class, and a genuine fit with the campus’s mission. What helps most is a strong record in your A-G courses, evidence that you used the opportunities available to you well, and experiences that connect to leadership, service, research, initiative, or resilience.

UC Merced especially values students who will contribute to a growing, public research university with a strong commitment to access, community impact, and the Central Valley. That means activities do not need to be flashy. A part-time job, family responsibilities, long-term volunteering, starting a small project at school, tutoring classmates, or involvement in clubs can all help if you show depth, responsibility, and results.

In the PIQs, the strongest applications usually highlight specific actions and impact rather than broad claims. For example, instead of saying you are passionate about helping others, describe a concrete moment when you organized a peer study group, improved something in your community, or solved a problem at work or home. UC readers respond well to authenticity, growth, and evidence that you make the most of your environment.

If you are interested in majors tied to UC Merced’s strengths, it can also help to show relevant preparation. The campus is known for areas like engineering, environmental research, biological sciences, health-related fields, and interdisciplinary study. Advanced math and science coursework, coding projects, research exposure, environmental work, or community health service can reinforce fit if they are genuinely part of your story.

The biggest mistake is trying to sound impressive in a generic way. A compelling UC Merced application usually makes it easy to see who you are, how you have contributed where you are, and how you would keep doing that on a campus that values initiative, collaboration, and upward momentum.
