How is Michigan State University's engineering program reputation viewed by employers and graduate schools?

I'm a high school junior looking at engineering programs, and Michigan State is one of the schools on my list. I know rankings only tell part of the story, so I'm trying to understand how the engineering program is actually viewed outside of the brochure.

I'm mostly curious about whether the degree is respected by employers and graduate schools, and how it compares in reputation to other large public universities.

Michigan State’s engineering degree is generally respected by employers and graduate schools, especially in the Midwest and in industries that recruit heavily from large public research universities. The College of Engineering is ABET-accredited, which matters a lot for employers in engineering fields, and MSU has strong research output and long-standing corporate recruiting ties. Its reputation is solid rather than elite-national, but it is viewed as a credible, well-rounded public engineering program.

For employers, MSU engineers do well because the school has a big alumni network, strong co-op and internship opportunities, and a practical reputation. Companies that hire at large state universities often know Michigan State well, especially in automotive, manufacturing, supply chain, environmental, and general engineering roles. The campus location in East Lansing also helps with access to Michigan’s industrial base and nearby recruiters from the broader Great Lakes region.

For graduate school, MSU is respected as a research university, so students who earn strong grades, do undergraduate research, and get good recommendations can absolutely move on to reputable master’s and PhD programs. Graduate admissions care much more about your coursework, research experience, and faculty relationships than the school name alone. In that sense, MSU gives you a credible platform, especially if you take advantage of research and honors opportunities.
