How does Michigan State’s test-optional policy work for freshman applicants?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out whether I should submit my SAT score when I apply to Michigan State. I know some schools are test optional, but I’m not sure how that affects the review process.

I want to understand how MSU treats applicants who choose not to send test scores versus those who do.

Michigan State is test optional for freshman applicants, which means you can apply without submitting SAT or ACT scores and still be fully considered for admission. If you do send scores, MSU will review them as one part of your application, but they are not required for general freshman admission. MSU says it uses a holistic review, so your academic record, course rigor, and other parts of the application still matter a lot whether or not you submit scores.

For students who do not send scores, MSU evaluates them using the rest of the application, especially GPA and the strength of the classes taken in high school. If you choose to submit scores, they can help provide extra context, especially if they are stronger than your academic record might suggest.
