What should I highlight in a Michigan State freshman application?

I’m a high school junior starting to work on my college list, and Michigan State is one of the schools I’m looking at seriously. I know the application is more than just grades, so I’m trying to understand what kinds of things matter most in a freshman application.

I want to make sure I focus on the right parts of my profile instead of wasting time on things that won’t help much.

For a Michigan State freshman application, you should highlight strong academics first, then show steady involvement, leadership, and a clear sense of how you would contribute to campus. If you’re applying to a more selective major, that academic preparation becomes even more important. The goal is to show both readiness for college coursework and evidence that you’ll be an engaged Spartan.

Michigan State also values what you’ve done outside the classroom, especially if you’ve taken initiative or had long-term commitment. That can mean leadership in a club, sustained volunteering, a job, family responsibilities, athletics, or a project you built on your own. They are not looking for a single “perfect” activity list as much as real involvement and growth. If you have a special talent, research experience, or community impact, that is worth emphasizing too.

In your essay or personal statement, focus on specific experiences that show your character, interests, and motivation rather than just listing achievements. If you can connect your interests to MSU’s strengths, such as its large research opportunities, Big Ten school spirit, or strong programs in areas like business, engineering, agriculture, education, and communications, that can make your application feel more intentional. Strong, specific writing can help them see the person behind the transcript.

If you want the most useful areas to spend time on, prioritize your grades and course load, then the activities that show commitment and leadership, and finally essays that reveal personality and purpose.
