What should a freshman focus on for Tulane application strategy?

I’m a high school freshman and Tulane is one of the colleges I’ve started looking at. I know it’s way too early to apply, but I want to understand what kinds of things Tulane seems to value so I can plan ahead.

I’m mainly trying to figure out what I should focus on over the next few years to put myself in a strong position later.

For Tulane, a freshman should focus on building a strong academic record, showing real engagement outside the classroom, and staying open to service-oriented and community-minded activities. Tulane is selective and looks for students who can handle rigorous coursework, but it also pays a lot of attention to how you use your time beyond grades, especially if your activities show initiative, leadership, and impact.

Academically, the best long-term strategy is to take the most challenging classes you can do well in as they become available, with steady grades in core subjects. Consistency matters more than trying to rush into impressive-sounding activities without depth.

Outside class, Tulane tends to like students who are active in their schools and communities. Because the university has a strong reputation for civic engagement and public service, it helps if your activities show that you care about people, not just resume-building. That could mean volunteering, student government, organizing events, tutoring, or leading something that actually affects others.

It also helps to develop one or two interests in a deeper way rather than joining a long list of clubs. If you can show growth, leadership, and a clear personal thread, that will be more useful than scattering your effort across too many unrelated activities.
