Is Tulane a good fit for a student interested in engineering but also wants flexibility outside a traditional engineering school?

I’m a high school junior looking at colleges with engineering, but I’m not sure I want a super technical or narrowly focused campus. Tulane seems interesting because it looks like it has engineering while still feeling more like a broader university.

I’m trying to figure out what kind of student actually fits Tulane’s engineering program and whether it’s a good match for someone who wants strong academics but also flexibility to explore other interests.

Yes, Tulane can be a very good fit if you want engineering within a broader, less rigid university environment. Its School of Science and Engineering is relatively small compared with large standalone engineering schools, which often means more flexibility, easier access to professors, and more room to combine engineering with other academic interests. Tulane also has a strong overall liberal arts feel, so the campus culture is usually not dominated by engineering in the way it is at more purely technical institutions.

Tulane tends to fit students who want solid engineering academics but also care about exploring fields like public health, business, policy, design, environmental studies, or the social sciences. That is especially true because Tulane emphasizes interdisciplinary work and community engagement, and New Orleans itself creates opportunities tied to infrastructure, coastal issues, health, and urban systems. If you are interested in seeing how engineering connects to real-world problems rather than staying only in a traditional technical bubble, that can be a real plus.

It may be a particularly good match if you like the idea of smaller programs in areas such as biomedical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, or mechanical engineering, while still having access to a full university experience.
