Carnegie Mellon early decision vs early action: what is the difference for applicants?
I'm a junior starting to build my college list, and Carnegie Mellon is one of the schools I'm seriously looking at.
I'm confused about how early decision compares to early action there, especially in terms of what each option means for me as an applicant.

At Carnegie Mellon, the main difference is commitment. Early Decision is binding, which means if you apply ED and are admitted, you are expected to enroll and withdraw applications from other colleges. Early Action is non-binding, so you can apply early, get a decision sooner, and still compare other offers before deciding.
For applicants, that changes the strategy quite a bit. ED makes sense only if Carnegie Mellon is clearly your first choice and you are comfortable committing before seeing other admission results and most financial aid packages. EA gives you more flexibility, which is useful if you want to keep options open.
If affordability will be a major factor, EA is usually the safer route because you can compare financial aid offers. If you already know CMU is your top choice and the financial side is manageable, ED can be a good fit.
