Does applying Early Decision increase your chance of admission to college?

I'm a high school senior trying to decide if Early Decision is worth it for my top-choice school. I keep seeing people say ED gives you a better shot, but I can't tell whether that is actually because colleges favor ED applicants or because stronger applicants tend to apply that way.

I'm trying to understand whether applying ED really increases your admission chances in a meaningful way.

Usually, yes, applying Early Decision can increase your chances, but the size of that boost depends a lot on the college.

Part of that is because colleges do like ED applicants: it gives them a committed student, helps their yield, and lets them lock in part of the class early. So there often is a real institutional preference for ED.

The most accurate way to think about it is this: ED tends to help most when you are already a strong, realistic candidate for that college and the school is clearly your first choice. It is much less likely to rescue an application that is well below the school’s typical academic range.

If your application would be competitive in Regular Decision, ED may provide a meaningful bump. If your grades, rigor, scores if submitted, and overall profile are not in range, ED usually will not change the outcome much.
