What is Brandeis University known for academically?

I’m trying to figure out how Brandeis is viewed for academics beyond just general rankings. I’m a junior building my college list, and I want to understand which subjects or programs Brandeis is especially known for in a way that would matter when comparing schools.

Brandeis is especially well known for strong academics in the social sciences, humanities, and sciences, with a reputation for being intellectually serious and research-oriented. It is often viewed as a place where undergraduates can get close access to faculty and meaningful research earlier than they might at a larger university.

A few areas stand out most. Brandeis has long been respected for economics, politics, international and global studies, sociology, and psychology. It is also notably strong in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and related pre-med pathways, partly because of its research culture and connections to the broader Boston-area academic and medical ecosystem.

In the humanities, Brandeis is known for history, English, philosophy, and Jewish studies. Its Near Eastern and Judaic studies programs are particularly distinctive and are among the fields people often associate most strongly with the school.

If you are comparing schools, Brandeis is usually seen less as a preprofessional, business-focused university and more as a liberal arts-minded research university. That means it tends to appeal most to students who want rigorous discussion-based classes, strong analytical training, and access to research, rather than a campus identity built around engineering, architecture, or undergraduate business.
