Is Brandeis or Boston University more fun for undergraduates?

I’m trying to figure out which school would be a better fit socially, since I care a lot about campus life outside of classes. I’ve heard both Brandeis and BU are in the Boston area, but they seem to have very different vibes.

I’m mostly wondering which one tends to feel more fun for an average undergrad, especially in terms of social scene and weekend life.

The biggest tradeoff is this: BU gives you a much busier, city-based social life with constant options, while Brandeis offers a smaller, more contained campus community that can feel easier to settle into but less active on weekends. BU is woven right into Boston, so undergrads have quick access to restaurants, concerts, internships, and events off campus. Brandeis is in Waltham, and while it is still near Boston, student life depends more on what is happening on campus and in a tighter circle of peers.

For an average undergrad thinking specifically about “fun,” BU usually feels more energetic. The tradeoff is that BU can feel less traditionally communal because it is spread through the city and not centered around one enclosed campus.

Brandeis tends to be more intimate and more relationship-driven socially. People often know each other across clubs, classes, and residence life in a way that can feel warm and familiar. But students who want a lively weekend scene every week sometimes find Brandeis quieter, especially because it is smaller and more residential.

So if “more fun” means variety, movement, and having something to do both on and off campus almost all the time, BU has the edge. If “more fun” means a close-knit social atmosphere where it is easier to find your people and build a stable community, Brandeis can be more satisfying. For most students asking this exact question about weekend life and overall energy, BU is probably the one that feels more fun.
