How should I compare merit scholarship value at the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Alabama often makes a larger-looking merit offer, especially to nonresidents, while Georgia can be the lower-cost and more academically advantageous option for a Georgia resident once in-state tuition and state aid are counted. Compare the four-year renewable value, not the first-year headline award. At either school, add tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, travel, health insurance if applicable, and likely annual price increases.

Read each scholarship letter for what it actually covers. Determine whether the award applies to tuition only or can offset fees, housing, or other charges; whether it is fixed for four years; and whether it stacks with outside scholarships, need-based aid, honors funding, or Georgia programs such as HOPE or Zell Miller. A tuition scholarship at one school is not automatically equivalent to a dollar award at the other if remaining fees and living costs differ.

Renewal rules matter just as much as the amount. Check the required cumulative GPA, minimum credits completed each year, full-time enrollment requirement, treatment of withdrawals or study abroad, and whether an appeal is possible after a difficult semester. Also ask whether the GPA threshold is based on institutional grades only and whether scholarship funding is available for a fifth year, co-op term, or changed major.

For academics, compare the specific program rather than the universities in the abstract: required courses, class access, undergraduate research, internship pipelines, advising, honors options, and outcomes in your intended field. UGA may offer particular value through its Athens setting, in-state network, and programs that align with your goals; Alabama may provide exceptional value if its merit package substantially reduces your net cost and its program offers the opportunities you want.

Choose UGA if its final four-year cost is close to Alabama’s and its program, campus experience, or Georgia-based opportunities fit you better. Choose Alabama when the verified, renewable savings are meaningfully larger without sacrificing the academic path and environment you want.
