Which is generally better for merit scholarships: the University of Georgia or the University of Alabama?

The University of Alabama is typically the more favorable option for merit scholarships for academically strong out-of-state students. Alabama has a long-standing practice of offering substantial, published undergraduate merit awards to nonresidents who meet specified academic criteria, while UGA’s major merit awards are far fewer and much more selective. For a student whose priority is lowering cost through predictable merit aid, Alabama is the clearer starting point.

UGA does award excellent merit scholarships, including prestigious programs such as the Foundation Fellowship and Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship, but these are highly competitive selection-based awards rather than broad automatic scholarships. Many of UGA’s most significant state-supported financial benefits, including the HOPE and Zell Miller programs, are intended for eligible Georgia residents and do not solve the cost issue for most out-of-state applicants.

Compare each school’s current scholarship deadlines and renewal requirements carefully. At UGA, it is especially important not to assume that strong grades and scores alone will produce a large merit award.
