Is Northwestern or Harvard More Prestigious for a Business Career?
I’m a high school senior interested in studying business and building a career in consulting or finance. I’m comparing Northwestern and Harvard, but I’m unsure how employers generally perceive the two schools for business-related careers.

The practical tradeoff is Harvard’s broader global name recognition versus Northwestern’s especially strong connection to the Chicago business ecosystem and the Kellogg brand. For consulting and finance, both schools are major recruiting destinations. Neither offers a traditional undergraduate business major, so students commonly prepare through economics, quantitative fields, finance-related coursework, student investment groups, and internships.
Harvard carries more immediate name recognition with employers and international audiences, which can be useful in highly competitive early-career recruiting and careers outside the United States. Its alumni network is exceptionally large across finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, and investing. Harvard students also have access to the broader Boston and New York recruiting pipelines, although landing selective roles still depends heavily on interview preparation, experience, and academic performance.
Northwestern is also highly respected by consulting and finance employers. Its strength in economics, mathematics, industrial engineering, and mathematical methods in the social sciences can be particularly valuable for analytically oriented business careers. Kellogg is a graduate school, but its presence contributes to Northwestern’s business reputation and creates a campus culture with substantial interest in consulting, entrepreneurship, and marketing. Chicago offers meaningful access to firms in consulting, private equity, trading, and corporate finance.
On prestige alone, Harvard has the clearer edge. For an actual consulting or finance career, though, the difference is far smaller than the headline names suggest: Northwestern is an excellent launching point, and fit, cost, academic interests, and your ability to build a strong recruiting record should carry more weight than the prestige gap.
