Boston University’s College of Communication is well regarded and has a substantial alumni presence in journalism, film and television, public relations, and digital media. Its urban setting can make it easier to build a résumé through local outlets, production work, and semester-long internships. In entertainment, however, neither school’s location substitutes for actively pursuing internships and connections in major industry hubs.

For prestige with media employers, Northwestern has the clearer edge, especially for journalism and high-profile editorial or broadcast pathways. A Medill credential can create an immediate positive signal, although it will not outweigh a stronger portfolio, reporting clips, production reel, or internship record from BU. BU is a respected program whose practical opportunities can be especially valuable for a student ready to use Boston aggressively.

Choose Northwestern if prestige and long-term national media signaling are the deciding factors. Choose BU when its cost, campus environment, or ability to provide substantially more real-world experience in Boston makes it the more workable place to build your portfolio.
