What is a good college application timeline for high school juniors?

I’m a junior trying to get organized early, but I’m not sure what I should actually be doing now versus later. I keep seeing different advice about when to start researching colleges, testing, essays, and asking for recommendation letters.

I’m looking for a general timeline that makes sense during junior year so I don’t fall behind or do everything too early.

A solid junior-year timeline is less about doing everything early and more about doing the right things in the right order.

Fall of junior year: focus on grades first. Start a college list spreadsheet with basics like size, location, majors, cost, selectivity, and application types. If you may take the SAT or ACT, this is a good time to decide which test fits you better and map out a first test date.

Winter of junior year: narrow your list into broad categories like likely, target, and reach. Look more seriously at academic programs, financial aid policies, and campus culture. If testing is part of your plan, begin prep a few months before your first exam instead of cramming.

Spring of junior year: this is one of the most important periods. Take the SAT, ACT, or AP exams if relevant, and keep your grades strong because junior-year performance matters a lot. Visit campuses if possible, either in person or virtually, and start thinking about which teachers know you well enough to write recommendation letters.

Late spring, around May or June: ask for recommendation letters before school ends, especially if your school prefers teachers to be asked before summer. Choose teachers from core academic subjects who can say specific things about your work, growth, and classroom presence. Also make sure your activities list is updated while details are still fresh.

Summer after junior year: this is the best time to get ahead. Finalize a balanced college list, draft your main personal statement, and make a calendar of application deadlines, supplement releases, and testing dates if you plan to retest.
